Episode 41 :: How to heal your body image
Its mental health awareness week here in the Uk and the theme for this year is Body Image. Research has found that higher body dissatisfaction is associated with a poorer quality of life and psychological distress, and sadly, one in five adults in the UK described (20%) feeling disgusted because of their body image in the last year. Our body image is a huge source of self-doubt.
I wanted to share with you the story of a woman who has one of the most spectacular body images I know of.
When she was 4 years old Sylvia Mac suffered 3rd and 4th degree burns over my back and various parts of her body. She was put on life support and was not expected to live. But she pulled through only to face years of surgeries and skin grafts as her body healed. The unseen scars of PTSD took much much longer to recover from.
These days Sylvia campaigns for those with body disfigurements by raising awareness through her not-for-profit campaign group, Love Disfigure. She has a fortnightly swim meet for people with skin conditions, health conditions, scars, marks, burns to help them become confident again. And she has set up a pathway for burn survivors in a local hospital.
I found Sylvia’s incredible Instagram feed a few months ago and I have a huge amount of admiration for her ethos disfigurement is just an extra part of our uniqueness. Listen in!
